IMARA and IAO have signed an agreement, Memorandum Of Understanding, to work more closely together on artists’ rights internationally

The partnership aims to give music artists a stronger collective voice on major issues affecting the industry, particularly:

  • Streaming: pushing for fairer remuneration and sustainable conditions for artists.
  • AI: advocating for artists’ consent, transparency, licensing, enforceable rights and fair payment when their performances are used.
  • Audiovisual rights: strengthening protections for performers whose work is used in film, TV and other audiovisual media.
  • Contracts and transparency: promoting fairer, clearer agreements between artists and the industry.
  • Representation: ensuring artists have a meaningful role in policy and industry decisions that affect their rights and income.

Under the MoU, the two organisations will share expertise and information, coordinate advocacy internationally, and potentially run joint campaigns, research and policy initiatives. IMARA brings together collective management organisations, while IAO represents national artist organisations. By combining these networks, they hope to have more influence in international discussions about the future of music and ensure that artists receive proper recognition and compensation as streaming, AI and other technologies change the industry.
